On Monday, May 22, 2006, Fairfax Futures and Fairfax County’s Office for Children co-hosted an engaging program with award-winning children’s book author and illustrator, Mo Willems. The event highlighted the important role that child care providers play in nurturing young children’s literacy skills. Approximately 200 early childhood educators enjoyed the humorous and insightful remarks from the author of “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus,” “Leonard the Terrible Monster,” “Knufflebunny” and other award-winning titles. Willems, a Caldecott award-winning author and illustrator, also is a former writer for Sesame Street and stand-up comic; he brought all his talents to bear as he read excerpts from several of his books and taught participants how to bring children’s stories to life.
The evening program was made possible through a generous grant from Capital One, an Honor Roll Business Partner in Fairfax Futures’ School Readiness Network.
